When God Returns

Diane Epling

Most believers have heard stories about the end times, but I’m not sure we fully understand the powerful effect this will have on the earth and its people. Take a moment to picture what you think it will be like when Jesus returns to earth to claim His bride. Now, what did your picture look like? Did you envision this older angelic being who will appear in the sky, gather us beneath His wings, and carry us to a palatial paradise? While this is a beautiful and comforting picture, it’s not exactly what God tells us to expect. God’s Word shows us the true picture of His return in Revelation 19:11-15 NIV. I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice He judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on His head are many crowns. He has a name written on Him that no one knows but He Himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following Him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of His mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.”

Let’s rethink that previous picture, shall we? First of all, Jesus doesn’t return as a kind-hearted older angelic being—that’s not how our King will appear. He’ll come riding on a powerful white horse, leading an army of heavenly warriors. His eyes will flame, and His mouth will be a cutting sword that will strike rebellious nations. He will rule with an iron rod that signifies His authority over the enemy. Don’t be fearful! Believe it or not, this is a much more comforting picture for believers. We have God Almighty and an entire army of mighty angels coming to battle the enemy for what they’ve tried to do to us and God’s creation. I want the God who can command the weather, split the seas, and protect us from a fiery furnace and hungry lions to fight for me, don’t you?

Instead of questioning how or when God will return, perhaps we should ask where WE are in our relationship with God. What does our TODAY look like? All we must do is look around to see the results of our disobedience. Wars expand the globe. People suffer incredible diseases, struggle against depression, and are divided by mistaken beliefs and unstable governments. The earth is shaken to its core, filling our lands with fires, floods, quakes, and droughts in response to our sins. Many of today’s spiritual leaders say these are the signs of the end times, and I agree.

It’s time to face our struggles and fight our battles from the victory given to us by God. God wants us to see Him in truth and strength, and He also wants us to know we have that same power as children of God. We don’t have to be in bondage to sin, to a broken world. God has given us the freedom to fight back; the victory is ours already. Now, that’s what I call comforting!
