The Power of Memorizing God’s Word

Diane Epling

Reading and studying the Bible teaches us about the power of God and the love He has for us. However, memorizing His Word lets us quickly wield the sword of that power against the enemy’s lies and attempts to destroy us. Being able to quote God’s Scripture against the enemy calls on God’s army to fight for and with us. Burning God’s Word on our hearts and minds gives us His wisdom, confidence, and teachings in every situation. Let me give you an example of how I have drawn on the Scriptures in my time of need.

I’ve told this story in more detail in my book “The Voice of the Church,” but I’ll give you a brief overview here. In 2023, the enemy tried to take my husband’s life and destroy mine. Tim had a stroke as he was driving, causing him to be in a head-on accident, traveling at a speed of 55 miles per hour. Doctors said most people wouldn’t have survived such a traumatic event, but God had told us we were going to have a powerful ministry together, and we never doubted that all was in God’s hands. It was almost unbearable at times, but we clung to God’s Word. Isaiah 43:26 KJV says, “Put Me in remembrance,” and that’s precisely what we both did. We stood on God’s promises and quoted His Scripture in our prayers. In doing so, God increased our faith, gave us the strength and confidence to face the enemy head-on, and transformed us into Warriors of Fire. In Proverbs 7:2-3 NIV, we learned how to brandish the most powerful weapon of all—God’s Word. It says, “Keep My commandments, and you will live; guard My teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart.”

God never abandoned us—He has been with us every step of the way. God’s Word strengthened us when faced with the enemy’s destructive forces. When despair threatened to engulf us, God’s Word offered encouragement and hope. God gave us victory, showing us our true identity in Him. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the Book of Daniel, our faith was tested by fire, and God stood in the fire with us. In doing so, he gave us powerful testimonies that engage others and teach them about God’s overwhelming love.

God has not created us as weaklings but bold warriors wearing His armor. Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV tells us to put on the whole armor of God and claim victory over the enemy’s schemes. Memorize the pieces and purposes of God’s armor. Cover yourself with His Word in times of trouble. Hold onto all the miracles in God’s Word and move in His purpose for your life.
